The lawyers question (Mt 22:36) was a tricky legal one -- "Which commandment in the law is the greatest?" Matthew says he was out to test Jesus (though in Mark's account in Mk 12 he comes across as more genuine). He may well have been expecting Jesus to pick one of the 10 Commandments and then he could have debated his selection with him. We'll be coming to the 10 Commandments in our Exodus reading in about a week. When we do, read them with Jesus' brilliant answer in mind. He summed up the whole Law by saying "Love the LORD your God..." (quoting Deut 6:5) and "Love your neighbour as yourself" (quoting Lev 19:18). The perfect answer! And an overwhelmingly important one. That's why it's part of our VISION STATEMENT -- "To be a body of Christ-like people living out the Great Commandment....." But as a relative newcomer to our Church honestly asked the other week: "How do you love God?" A good question, eh!
