I'm that bad. I reckon I whinge and complain more than they do; don't you reckon so? And I never do what I'm told either (in regard to God-stuff); in fact, I miss what I'm told in the first place coz I'm not even listening half of the time.
So, either I'm just as pathetic as the Israelites, or you're just a goody-goody ;P
You've never come across to me as a whinger, Lisa. Honest, yes; but not a whinger. At least not on the same level as the Israelites. As Callum said, they were pretty good (bad?) at it. They developed it into a fine art. Though their whinges did cover a period of months. If all my whinges over a few months were all written down consecutively, I wouldn't come out looking too good either!
Whingeing's one thing, but the lack of praise, or even a thank you, is quite another. Though no doubt related as I think about it. I wrote a comment about that for 23/24 April. In Ex 17 the people again complain about lack of water, God again provides it for them, and again no word of thanks. At least Moses built an altar after the victory over the Amalekites.
But it's Jethro who sets the example in Ex 18. He is introduced as "the priest of Midian" (18:1) ie of the Midianites and their foreign gods. But then "Jethro rejoiced over all the good things the LORD had done for Israel when He rescued them from the Egyptians. 'Blessed is the LORD,' Jethreo exclaimed... Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods... Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God..." (18:9-12). A breath of fresh air at last after all the complaining in the previous couple of chapters.
Somewhat of a rebuke to the Israelites and their attitude at this time I would have thought. Certainly a contrast.
The list of necessary qualifications that Jethro says the officials/judges must have (Ex 18:21) is short but comprehensive. The "successful applicant" will be able (ie capable), God-fearing, trustworthy and hating bribes.
We need more leaders like that. We need more people like that. They are good characteristics for us all.
Hi and welcome.
Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power".
This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. So leave your comments. Together we can help each other grow.
Blessings. Ps John.

Am I being unfair when I say the Israelites were a pack of whingers? Moan, moan, moan. And they can never do what they're told either.
We're not that bad are we?

Well if you're not good, at least you're honest.
Yeah, honesty is my character flaw; ironic eh?
