I thought Selwyn Hughes' comments on dis/honesty were insightful. (Though only very loosely related to the commandment about not giving "false testimony against your neighbour" in Ex 20:16.) For any who don't have the EDWJ Bible, here is a very brief summary.

He talks about "inner honesty" and "inner deceit" by which I think he means honesty/dishonesty about myself. He describes 3 forms of inner deceit which prevent inner honesty.
1. PROJECTION -- when I am to blame for something but project the blame onto someone else so that I can feel more comfortable about myself.
2. DENIAL -- when I fail, or refuse, to recognise what others plainly see in me.
3. RATIONALISATION -- when I persuade myself that something is what it is not and when I make excuses for myself.

Very challenging!

Mt 24:6 made me stop and ponder. I've often heard it said that "wars and rumours of wars" are signs that the 2nd coming of Jesus is imminent. But this verse says "You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet." Need to think a bit more about how that fits in with following verses. Maybe a case of being, as someone once said, "alert but not alarmed".

Here's a theory (not original, I'm sure) which just occurred to me as I was reading that passage. We've seen all those things in our history, but Jesus says "not yet, you will know when the time is". It makes me wonder if there is no single global end of time as traditionally thought. Perhaps the end is for each individual as they die and go to "meet their maker".

God is infinite - there is no reason he would have to make anything with a definite ending. Perhaps we just move from this place to the new Heaven/Earth.

Of course, talking about "time" and coexistence of separate universes doesn't really make sense anyway as you can't make a comparison between them (time is part of the definition of the universe - there is a theory about an extra 2 dimensions of time now - making a total of 6, rather than needing 11 dimensions as in string theory), so perhaps it's pointless to theorise. The key point is that we need to be ready for when the end comes which, based on history, is most likely to be our own whether or not Jesus eventually comes floating down on the clouds.

Hi Callum.
Sounds pretty original to me! I haven't heard that before. Maybe it's your sci-fi reading. You lost me in the middle, but I agree with your conclusion. Reminds me of what Larry Norman used to sing (remember him?) -- "I wish we'd all been ready." I'm not sure I agree with his working out either, but again he got the right conclusion.

As it turns out, I heard Fred Watson (the Astronomer-in-charge at the Anglo-Australian observatory at Siding Spring near Coonabarabran) talking on 702 the other day. He was trying to exlain the difference between a black holes, white holes (new one on me) and worm holes. Sounds a bit like Star Trek or Stargate to me but he was saying that worm holes could be the entrance into parallel worlds. "Beam me up Scotty." The trouble with exploring them though is that when you get through, it is unlikely that your molecules can be reconnected. So I think I'll just wait here for Jesus.

The latest episode of Heroes (which is probably a fair bit away from where it is up to in Oz) was String Theory related.

So, what's this new theory? Haven't heard of it before ...
