Movies that made you think
As part of our service on Sunday night, Karen T divided us up into small groups to discuss movies that have made us think. Here are some of the movies that were mentioned in the report-back session -- Chocolat; Jesus of Montreal; Being John Malkovich; the Apostle; Sliding Doors; Run Lola Run; The Passion of Christ; As it is in Heaven; A Beautiful Mind.
I'm sure there were others but that's all I can remember at the moment. If you can recall any more that were mentioned, or if you'd just like to add to the list, please leave a comment with the name of the movie and maybe even a rating or review. Remember that it's a list of movies to make you think. We're not necessarily recommending them as enjoyable, entertaining or uplifting, but as thought provoking.
P.S. Thanks to Lydia's homegroup for organising and conducting such an enjoyable and interesting service. And thanks to everyone who provided the delicious food beforehand.

Also: 12 Monkeys, Memento, Life is Beautiful, ... but wait there's more - I just can't remember what they were!
Don't forget the most important one - Run Baby Run - the movie we saw part of on Sunday night! there is a longer version that our homegroup watched...I think some of the other films were: Lord of the Flies, Forest Gump, Amelie and Fight Club...
As I wasn't in any of the groups I'd add Schindler's List, Dead Poet's Society, Bonhoeffer, The Mission and Philadelphia to the list. If we are also counting movies made from books/plays (even though its the book that makes you think) - my top 5 would have to include Chariots of Fire, To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men, Gallipoli and Narnia...
I was surprised no one mentioned Stand By Me, The Matrix films, Gattaca, Apocalypse Now or any of the Star Wars films (that last one is for you Lisa).
Actually, the whole question stumped me when I was at church, and then it stumped again when it was blogged; mainly because I don't watch movies (I've hardly seen any of the movies mentioned), but also because movies don't make me think (well, at least not any more than I normally think)...
Eragon made me think that you couldn't possibly destroy an originally good story any more than they did; Moulin Rouge made me think that prostitutes back then wore way more clothes than we wear in our everyday lives nowadays; and Star Wars ... well, The Phantom Menace made me think that George Lucas doesn't know what he's doing anymore, but besides that, I don't think there was any aspect of the movies left that my brother and I hadn't already got our heads around before we were old enough to actually conciously think ;P
BTW, welcome you two! You better keep on blogging from now on ...
Lisa, you mean to say that in all the movies you've watched, you have never seen a movie that made you respond (ie. think) more than others?!? Doesn't just have to be the story either - could be the structure, direction, the departure from the original book - anything really.
Of course, its not to say that you haven't pondered the issues involved before, more that you may have gained a new insight or perspective or even just thought something was clever.
I'm not saying that all or even the majority of those movies changed my views but some of them have made me think.
Looks like we may need to abandon Carry Grant & Audrey Hepburn movies at bible study and move on to some more modern classics...although there are clear links between Charade and Ecclesiastes.
Thanks everyone. Obviously quite a few I hadn't remembered from Sun night. Also some good additions that weren't mentioned on Sun night. Spot on with Bonhoeffer and Dead Poet's Society Karen. I also thought of The Corporation later -- though it's excruciating in some ways. Along the same lines, surprised no-one has mentioned that one by Al Gore. I haven't seen it (though I did watch Andrew Denton's interview with him on Enough Rope). Anyone else see it? Did it make you think?
You see, I thought watching movies was the once in a blue moon opportunity to turn your brain off and NOT think for once :P
But, ok then ...
Serenity
Moulin Rouge
The Others
Hannibal Rising
The Bourne Identity
The Reaping ... Fark, talk about psycho devil-worshippers! But hey, bet you've never heard such a plausible scientific reasoning of the plagues of Egypt in under a minute :P

(I'm trying to get a pretty picture happening like Lisa & John, so far all I've done is get my nickname up & running!)
Movies that made you think ... the list just grows and grows.
Can't think how I forgot Gattaca or The Others for instance but I really can't acccept the Star Wars films in this category - even Lisa said it made her think of how bad George Lucas is!
But how about Brazil, Unforgiven, Crash?
