Readings for 27,28 May & comments

The Bible readings for Sunday 27 and Monday 28 May are -- Lev 6:1-7:21; Ps 25:8-15; Pro 6:6-8; Mk 2:1-22.
I'm thinking of speaking on Pro 6:6-8 and the following 3 verses this Sunday night (2 June). Any thoughts?

More blood and detailed ritual. Do you get the message that sin is serious? They certainly would have. Because the processes for dealing with it were so involved. The religious leaders had very prescriptive directions to follow. Directions given by God as to how to obtain His forgiveness.

The Psalmist points to this: "He shows sinners the way -- All the LORD's ways show faithful love and truth, to those who keep His covenant and decrees... forgive my sin, for it is great" (Ps 25:8-11).

No wonder then the Jewish religious leaders in Jesus' day were so incensed when Jesus said to the paralytic "Son, your sins are forgiven" (Mk 2:5). All they had ever learnt and believed and taught was that only God could forgive sins, and only after the God-given provisions of the Law had been followed. No wonder they called Jesus' words blasphemy.

But they weren't. Forgiveness was available without the ritual. Not that Jesus was minimising the seriousness of sin. After all, he gave himself as a sacrifice so we could have forgiveness.
