With the Red Sea in front of them and the Egyptian soldiers behind them, the Israelites were full of complaints. God heard their cries and miraculously delivered them (end Ex 14). Now, quite rightly, they were full of praise -- "This is my God, and I will praise Him, my father's God, and I will exalt Him."
But before long they are complaining again (about lack of water in 15:24) and again (about lack of food in 16:2,3). Each time God heard their cries and delivered them, providing water, quail and manna.
But there's something missing here. I was hoping to find it but didn't. After these occasions there is no record of the people giving thanks to God. It seems to me that after they moved on from the Red Sea they started taking God for granted. Maybe the provision of water and food didn't seem so special to them. Yet these too were miracles from God.
I point the finger at the Israelites, but if I'm honest, I too have often taken God for granted and failed to praise Him for his blessings.
Hi and welcome.
Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power".
This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. So leave your comments. Together we can help each other grow.
Blessings. Ps John.
