I've just read an advance copy of the church bulletin for this coming Sunday (6 May). Gordon has made some comments on Proverbs 4:20-22 which are very apt, especially as we head into May as a church. I've reproduced his comments below for your reflection.
Over the last couple of weeks in our "Thru' in 2" readings and associated messages, we have been thinking about the Ten Commandments and linking those to the Great Commandment as taught by Jesus. That Great Commandment is of course an important part of our own church identity as we seek to be a body of Christ-like people living it out in practice. However, our church statements also link us to the Great Commission, to go into the world and make disciples, and today we begin a time of focus on that aspect of our Christian living as we enter May, traditionally "missions month" in Baptist churches, where we consider especially our missionary calling and our missionary family, both from our Baptist Global InterAction perspective, and from that of the wider mission scene. These verses from Proverbs that we read during the week highlight the importance for all humanity to hear and respond to the true words of life, the Word of God, and surely this is what we are seeking to achieve as we reach out in mission; that by faithful proclaiming and teaching, people of all nations will hear the Word of God and thus find true, eternal life.
Hi and welcome.
Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power".
This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. So leave your comments. Together we can help each other grow.
Blessings. Ps John.
