I find the little parable in Lk 17:7-10 an incredible challenge. "When you have done all that you were commanded, you shpuld say, 'We are good-for-nothing slaves; we've only done our duty.' "
Too often I've been more like the older son in another of Jesus' parables (Lk 15:11-32). "Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me..."
We are to be slaves of Christ - disciples who have handed our lives over to our Master. Like the bond slaves in Deut 15:16-17. Paul certainly saw himself in those terms (eg Rom 1:1; Philippians 1:1; Titus 1:1).
The amazing thing is what Jesus said about his second coming in Lk 12:37. "Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them."
