Hi and welcome. Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power". This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. I find the little parable in Lk 17:7-10 an incredible challenge. "When you have done all that you were commanded, you shpuld say, 'We are good-for-nothing slaves; we've only done our duty.' "
Too often I've been more like the older son in another of Jesus' parables (Lk 15:11-32). "Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me..."
We are to be slaves of Christ - disciples who have handed our lives over to our Master. Like the bond slaves in Deut 15:16-17. Paul certainly saw himself in those terms (eg Rom 1:1; Philippians 1:1; Titus 1:1).
The amazing thing is what Jesus said about his second coming in Lk 12:37. "Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them."
