The man's request that Jeus help him get his share of his inheritance from his brother seemed reasonable enough, but not to Jesus (Lk 12:13,14). He seemed to discern that the man was greedy (as he did with the rich young ruler), focussed more on getting money than enhancing brotherly relationships. So Jesus takes the opportunity to teach the crowd - "Watch out and be on your guard against all greed because one's life is not in the abundance of his provisions." (12:15). I like the New Living Translation - "Real life is not measured by how much we own."

Jesus goes on to tell the powerful parable of the rich farmer. Perhaps we should call it the parable of the foolish farmer, or even the poor farmer. It's a story about greed, following on from the previous incident. But it also speaks to related issues such as materialism, selfishness, priorities and work-life balance. Ultimately, it's a warning against leaving God out of our lives.
