About Me
- Name: Ps John
- Location: Ashfield, Sydney, Australia
Hi and welcome. Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power". This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. So leave your comments. Together we can help each other grow. Blessings. Ps John. Here are Gordon's inspirational comments on Joshua 1:6-8 as printed in bulletin of 21/9/07.
"Joshua here has taken over the leadership of Israel from Moses. It will be his role and responsibility to lead the people into the land God has promised them. An awesome responsibility! But we note from this passage that formed part of our “Thru’ in 2” readings just a few days ago, that God gives Joshua three key ideas. Firstly be courageous. Three times at least we find this in these verses. Trust in God, have faith. Do not look to yourself for strength but turn to your God who will always be with you. Second, be obedient. God has set down the rules. Joshua was charged with not only personally being obedient to the commands and the will of God as expressed in what we now know as the Pentateuch, the Books of the Law, but he was to faithfully lead the people in the ways that they should go. Thirdly, be confident. God here gives Joshua an assurance that He will be with him, whatever happens. Those same principles apply every bit as much to us today, in all the many complexities and contradictions of life. Be courageous. Don’t trust in yourself, trust only in God. Be obedient. Study the Word of God and live according to its principles. Be confident. Our God is with you, wherever you go. Lean on Him. He is your strength and your courage."
God's words to Joshua in Joshua 1:8 still have relevance to us today - "Study this Book of the Law continually. Meditate on it day and night so you may be sure to obey all that is written in it. Only then will you succeed." (NLT).
There is another key to godly success in Joshua 3:5 - "Consecrate yourselves, because the LORD will do wonders among you tomorrow." (EDWJ). I recall a guest speaker challenging us at Ashfield Baptist with these words back in about 2000. Consecration remains a vital necessity for God's blessing.
