Here are Gordon's comments on Psalm 54:1-4 from the bulletin of 14 October 2007.

Once again, as we continue our readings in Psalms as part of our "Thru' in 2" program, we encounter here the Psalmist at a point of crisis. He declares himself to be opposed by people who have no regard for the things of God, but at the same time, he finds assurance and comfort in the sure knowledge that God is, indeed, his help, the one he can turn to be his rescuer, his helper, his salvation. In short, he turns to God in prayer, as we have so often seen during these recent readings and in the accompanying messages and services. Times may have changed since then but the dilemma that the writer faces is much the same as we deal with today. It is not popular to be a Christian! To proclaim a love of the Lord Jeus Christ on a public platform is to invite ridicule from sections of the media as some have experienced only recently. How easy it would be to turn away from God and side with the world, to submerge ouselves in worldly values and ignore the claims of God. But God is also our helper. He will vindicate us by his might. He is the sustainer of our lives! Selwyn Hughes says this in his commentary:

"If the Psalmist were writing today, he might have worded his prayer like this: 'Save me, O Lord, from the lies of those who think they know the answer to life, but don't.' We must discover that before we can say 'yes' to God, we must first say 'no' to the world."

How will you respond?

On Sunday 14.10.07am I preached on a "Panoramic View of Judges". One of the things I talked about was "The Judges Cycle" (or the "ABCD Cycle") which repeats throughout Judges. The cycle begins with Apostacy (see 2:11-13), then Battles/Beaten (see 2:14-15), then Confession (see 2:18b), then Deliverance (see 2:16, 18a), then round to Apostacy again (see 2:19).

So here is a brief outline of Judges.
Apostacy 1. Beaten by Mesopotamia.
Judge #1 Othniel.
Apostacy 2. Moabites.
#2 Ehud & #3 Shamgar
Apostacy 3. Canaanites.
#4 Deborah.
Apostacy 4. Midianites.
#5 Gideon.
Apostacy 5. Abimelek.
#6 Tola & #7 Jair
Apostacy 6. Ammonites.
#8 Jephthah, #9 Ibzan,
#10 Elon, #11 Abdon.
Apostacy 7. Philistines.
#11 Samson
