Here is Gordon's comment on the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18) in the bulletin on Sunady 30/9/07.

Why do we pray? Our church goals encourage us to become people of prayer and to seek the Lord's heart and mind in all aspects of our lives, to avail ourselves of His Holy Spirit power, to know the reassurance of His daily presence with us. But why, and how, do we pray?

Spiros Zodhiates in his book, "The Lord's Prayer", challenges us to consider our motives in prayer. The example from Luke quoted here is a perfect example of right and wrong attitudes to and in prayer. Zodhiates puts it this way:

"All Christians would do well to ask themselves, 'Wht do I really pray? What is the motive in prayer?' What concerned Jesus, and what should also concern us, was not the practice of pious acts, but the motive that lay behing them. He was saying in effect, 'I am not so concerned with what you do in the way of religious observances but with why you do it.' Paul decalres (in 1 Corinthians 13) that all eloquence, all faith, all knowledge, even self-sacrifice, are useless and profit nothing - without the motivation of love... God looks into the heart to see what has inspired the words that have been uttered."

May we all grow to be people of true prayer, people who put the Kingdom of God and His rifghteousness before all else and who come humbly before Him in fervent, heartfelt prayer.

The story of the 10 lepers (Lk 17:11-19) teaches us to be thankful in our praying.
Jesus' parable about the persistent widow (18:1-8) teaches us to persevere in our prayers of supplication and intercession.
Jesus' parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (18:9-14) teaches us the importance of humble confession.

In the current psalm (51), David gives a great example of confession. He asks God to create a clean heart within him (v10), recognising that God desires "integrity in the inner self" (v6) more than sacrifices and burnt offerings.

Here is part of Gordon's comment (including a quote from Selwyn Hughes) on Psalm 51:10-13 in the bulletin on 7 October 2007.

Many of us carry around with us the guilt of things we have done (or maybe not done) and feel the need to continually come back to our God in confession - to seek from God that clean heart and right spirit that the Psalmist here speaks about. But how to get lasting peace and release? Selwyn Hughes offers some thoughts...

"The biggest problem with which human beings have to grapple is the problem of Guilt. ...Someone once said that the point at which psychology and religion meet is at the point of guilt. Christianity and the social sciences underline what the human heart knows so well: it cannot live comfortably with guilt. ...In [the Lord's Prayer] we have an adequate answer. 'Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors'. If we have fully accepted the forgiveness of God and we know our sins have been forgiven, the result is a pervading sense of peace. The human heart needs reconciliation, forgiveness and assurance."
