A couple of times I have wondered if Judas (Iscariot) will be in heaven. After all, all the disciples abandoned Jesus and they were forgiven - perhaps he just had a momentary lapse and will be forgiven too?

There are no doubt reasons why this isn't likely, but with this in mind, it's interesting to note that when Jesus called his disciples, he sent them out to proclaim the message and gave them authority to cast out daemons. Even Judas.

I heard a little smidgeon of the Spirit of Things the other day on the Gospel of Judas. I have downloaded the podcast but haven't listened to it yet. It seems to say that Judas was acting under the instructions of Jesus. There was a lot of discussion of the portrayal of Judas in the Bible and what may have happened to him, as well as the fuss about the Gospel of Judas book

I'll let you know when I listen to the whole thing whether it was any good or not. It is at: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/spiritofthings/default.htm

Mk 9:38-40 seems to support your case Callum. John tells Jesus that they saw a man casting out demons and told him to stop because he was not one of them. Jesus criticised this attitude and said: "No one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us."

On the other hand... there's Mt 7:22-23. "On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not... cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?' Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.'" (Actually that's another good excuse I should add to my Pearly Gates excuses.)

Those who stick up for Judas say things like:
* he believed Jesus was the Messiah and was just trying to force his hand and get him to act
* the negative verses about him are written by fellow-disciples who were biased against him
* he was repentant in the end.

Our limitation is that we can only guess or infer Judas' motives, thoughts and heart from his actions, whereas God looks into the heart. For eg, did Judas hang himself because he was repentant (and then will be in heaven) or because he was just remorseful or sorry or couldn't bare to face others or afraid of what others might do to him?? God knows.

I wonder whether Judas knew Proverbs 6:12-15 (also a reading for today)? Wise words he would have done well to heed.

I don't see why Judas wouldn't go to Heaven ... He chose to follow Jesus once, and weren't you (Callum) trying to tell me once that it's impossible to fall out of God's grace once you're in it (or something like that). He didn't blaspheme the Holy Spirit, so he should be forgiven ...

But did he really believe? Only God knows.

Who are you? What is your spiritual identity? Many Christians see themselves as "a sinner saved by grace". While that can be a helpful perspective, it is also a limited one. The author Neil Anderson says we need to understand our identity in Christ as being "a child of God who sometimes fails".

In today's devotion, Selwyn Hughes says "The certainty that we are God's adopted children ought to be uppermost in our thoughts". He also quotes Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones: "The most wonderful thing of all is not that my sins have been forgiven nor that I may enjoy certasin experiences and blessings as a Christian. The thing that should... overwhelm me is that I am a child of God." And as Jesus points out (Mk 3:33-35), with God as a Parent, then Jesus is our Brother.
