Another interesting conjunction of Old and New Testament passages. The Leviticus reading helps us understand what the woman with the bleeding disorder in Mark 5 had been going through. She'd had the disorder for 12 years. In an age before tampons and pads, that was very inconvenient, not to mention the physical pain that she may also have experienced. Beyond that though, there was the social stigma of ongoing uncleanness. Not only was she unclean, but her bed, any furniture she sat on, and anyone who touched them or her was unclean (Lev 15:25-27). What a burden to bear for so long. The doctors hadn't been able to help her. But through her faith in Jesus, she was healed (Mk 5:29,34).

"Scapegoat: a person made to bear the blame for others" (Collins English Dictionary). Here in Leviticus 16:7-10 & 20-22 we have the derivation of that term. One goat was to be sacrificed as a sin offering. The other, the scapegoat, was to be taken into the wilderness and released, symbolically bearing all the sins of the nation.

Jesus was our scapegoat, taking upon himself the sin that tainted us. But Jesus was also the sacrificial goat, dying as a sin offering on our behalf. Both types were wonderfully fulfilled in our Saviour Jesus.
