Here are a couple of questions we touched on when we looked at Ps 38 in the evening service on 12/8/07.
QUESTION -- Is David experiencing actual physical bodily sickness or just using symbolic, exaggerated language to express inner turmoil? (v3,5,7)
I reckon he was, but not everyone agreed. We agreed though that he was suffering "soul sickness"/guilt and that this can have physical manifestations.
QUESTION -- Does God punish? (v1)
General agreement that Derek Kidner (Tyndale Commentary) was right in saying: "It would be as wrong to think this is never so as that it is always so."
You've got to feel for John. "Along with many other exhortations, he proclaimed good news to the people." (lk 3:18) Nevertheless, Herod locks him up in prison (3:20). Clearly an example of something bad happening which is not caused by God as punishment.
I like the Indian proverb Selwyn Hughes quotes in his devotion on Pro 9:10 (though I can't really see how it relates to the verse.) " 'The best place to kill a cobra', runs an old Indian proverb, 'is in its egg.' Most sin follows on from a failure to kill it at the place of desire -- the 'eye.' "
