Here is part of Gordon's challenging comment on Ps 37:1-6 as printed in the bulletin on Sun 29/7/07.

Once again a familiar passage from the Psalms if you are following our "Thru in 2" readings. Here we see a contrast that has relevance for us today. On the one hand, we see those whose intent is on doing wrong and there's a warning there not to be tempted to join them! Do you find yourself getting just a little bit envious of those who in this world's terms are getting successful out of illegal or immoral activities. Do yo have just a touch of sympathy with the tax cheat or the shady business person seemingly adding to their ill-gotten gains! Scripture here gives us the antidote. Put your trust in the Lord and your reward will be far greater than you could ever imagine! Don't be fooled by evil... commit your way to the Lord instead.

Here's a brief overview of Luke (as preached 5/8/07 am).

BACKGROUND
Luke was a Gentile (only known Gentile author of a NT book), a doctor, historian, theologian. His Gospel is the longest NT book and includes lots of parables and miracles not recorded elsewhere. It is written to an individual (Theophilus) to give a thorough account (Lk 1:1-4).

STRUCTURE (per Warren Wiersbe)
Journey from Heaven to Earth (1st 3.5 chapters); Journey around Galilee (next 5); Journey to Jerusalem (next 10); Ministry in Jerusalem (next 5.5).

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM LUKE
(1) Jesus saves.
"Salvation" 0 in Mt & Mk, 1 in Jn, 6 in Lk.
"Saviour" 0 in Mt & Mk, 1 in Jn, 2 in Lk.
"Save" in Lk more than any of others.
Key verse in Lk is 19:10 -- "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
(2) Salvation is available to all.
Including disreputable (eg Zaccheus), Gentiles (Lk 2:30-32), women (many), poor (16:19-23). See 4:16-19.
(3) The HS is powerfully at work.
Note in chaps 1-4 and Acts.
(4) Importance of prayer/praise.
Lk records Jesus praying 9 times, and 7 only in Lk. 3 parables on prayer not elsewhere. Full odf praise eg Mary, Zachariah, Simeon, 24:52,53.
