In the church bulletin on 9 September, Gordon made the following comments on the Lord's Prayer (Lk 11:2-4).
"One of our goals as a church is to become more of a people of prayer. To spend more time both individually and corporately in prayer so that we may come to know our God better, to better understand His will for us and to be empowered by His Holy Spirit through the regular exercise of the discipline of prayer. Being a people of prayer will also extend our focus away from ourselves and on to others within our community and in the wider world as we seek to become more effective intercessors for the needs of those who perhaps are going through difficult times or exercising ministries in areas where extremes of spiritual warfare are an integral concern in day-to-day Christian living.
Mary was seated at the feet of Jesus listening to him. Martha was distracted by her much serving (not "many tasks" as in EDWJ). Distracted from what? Presumably from Jesus and listening to him. She complains about being left to serve alone. The Greek word for serving is diakoneo. It's where we get Deacon and Diaconate from.
The story is a powerful reminder to serve with the right attitude and to ensure that our service isn't a distraction. Service is good, but it needs to be balanced by time spent with Jesus, talking to and listening to him. Worthy service flows from right relationship with him.
