"...Eye for an Eye..." recalls for me the teaching of Jesus in Matt 5 about forgiving and turning the other cheek. But Jesus wasn't contradicting what the law said. In the context of Deut 19 we can see that the verse is about justice, whereas Jesus was talking about revenge. The law was always about what is right and wrong for the good of society, whereas Jesus was talking about motive (whoever hates his brother, looks at a woman, etc).
In the reading from Deuteronomy, we get a glimpse of how hard it was (and is) for Jews to accept the notion of a Messiah who saves through crucifixion. "Anyone hung on a tree is under God's curse" (21:23).
Jesus' words in Lk 9:23 must have been just as confronting and perplexing to them. "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me."
