In Deut 17:14-20, Moses gave the Israelites some pretty wise instructions for their new life in the Promised Land. Actually, they were God's instructions, through Moses. Unfortunately they weren't heeded.
* They were to appoint kings of God's choosing (v15). Too often politics interfered.
* The king was not to have many wives so his heart wouldn't go astray (v17). Note Solomon.
* The king was not to acquire much silver and gold for himself (v17). Again, note Solomon.
* The king was to copy God's instructions and read them daily (v19). We don't know that any did.
No wonder Israel was so often off the rails! And yet the Psalmist seems to blame God for defeats (44:9-26), as well as crediting him with the victories (44:1-8).
