When Gideon sneeks into the Midianite camp, he hears one of the Midianites recounting a dream and another giving the correct interpretation, and he is strengthened. The dream and the interpretation were both given by God to further His purposes. Does God still work through dreams today? Take a look at www.morethandreams.org Lyle and Nadine are organising a conference in Turkey with this as the theme. Pray for them and that barriers will be overcome.

Here are Gordon's comments on Judges 7:7-9 from the church bulletin of 21 October 2007.

How can I make a difference for God? How can the church, small as we are, make real changes in a sinful and godless society so that the love of God and the power of the Gospel can positively impact people's lives? Is the risk too big and the resource too small? Not where God is concerned! This story of Gideon which we looked at a couple of days ago in our "Thru' in 2" readings is a great example of how God can take a person of faith, who is obedient to do His will, and achieve miracles in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds. But of course, the odds are not overwhelming for God! There is nothing He cannot do. He just needs the people who are willing to hear, to follow and to obey, so that He can work wonders in them and through them. Listen to Selwyn Hughes on the subject:

"God has always done His greatest work in and through a comparatively small number of people. What God wants are men and women who are prepared to stand [for Him], whose feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Are you standing for God? Or are you ready to stand? It begins with a firm attitude which then issues into resolute action. As in Gideon's day, the Lord is looking for people who will take a stand on His word, come what may, and commit themselves to doing what He asks even though they may not feel like it or see reason in it."

Are you willing to let God use you to make a differenece to someone in His name today?

I can't quite make Gideon out. At times he definitely seems to live up to his name (which means "tree feller" or "warrior") but at other times he appears quite indecisive and fearful. He asks for a sign from the Angel of the LORD (6:17) and then later from God, not once but twice (6:37, 39). Was he wise and godly to seek confirmation and guidance through these signs? Or was he testing the LORD in his timidity and indecisiveness? I can't decide. What do you reckon?

What wonderful advice David gives in v22 of Psalm 55. He had learned this truth from bitter experience and passes it on with conviction that this is the answer. "Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will support you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken."
