We all need a friend like Jonathan. At great personal risk, he went to David who was hiding from Saul and his army. At a time of great trial for David, Jonathan "encouraged him in his faith in God" (23:16) by saying that Saul would never harm him and that he would be king. With great humility seeing he was the king's son, he even offered to be David's second-in command.
Saul, by way of contrast, continued to seek David in order to kill him. He became more and more obsessed and erratic. No wonder he started losing support as evidenced by Jonathan's falling out with him, and by the refusal of Saul's guards (except Doeg) to kill Ahimelech and the priests for allegedly siding with David. Saul illustrates Prov 14:17 - "A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, and a man who schemes is hated."
