I can't help smiling at this saga with the Ark of the Covenant. The Philistines thought they had won a great victory by capturing it and installing it in their Temple to Dagon. But the next morning they found their statue of Dagon face-down on the ground before the Ark. They put Dagon back, but the next morning, there he was again on the ground, but without his head and hands this time. Only his torso remained! The Ark is hastily removed to Gath, but the inhabitants start to die of tumours. They send it to Ekron, but the same happens there. Now no-one wants it. Everyone wants to send it back to Israel. They put it on a cart with some gold offerings and devise a test. If the cows pulling the cart go straight back to Israel, then it was God causing their problems. If not, it was chance. The cows go straight back to Israel! (6:12)
Such a comic series of events, yet also very serious. The Philistines learnt an important lesson through it all; a lesson they should have learnt from hearing about God's dealings with the Egyptians during Moses' time; a lesson about the power of God. Ultimately though, they still didn't become worshipers of God.
