Hi and welcome. Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power". This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. 1 Samuel 18 & 19 provide a powerful illustration of the truth of Proverbs 14:14 - "The disloyal will get what their conduct deserves, and a good man, what his deeds deserve."
Saul becomes progressively more jealous, angry and deceitful towards David to the point where he is obsessed with killing David or getting him killed. All he achieves through his evil schemes is alienation of his son Jonathan and his daughter Michal, both of whom loved David (18:1,28). Meanwhile, David acts with honour and becomes increasingly popular and sucessful, just as the proverb says.
Psalm 65:9-13 is a beautiful picture of an idyllic landscape with abundant water and verdant pastures. I imagine David writing these words as he meditates on his surroundings while watching sheep. David gives the credit to God and praises him for his goodness and blessings.
The picture David paints is the opposite to the dry, dead Australian landscapes we are increasingly seeing. Why is that? Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in the first half of the psalm where God is described as the one who answers prayer (v2), forgives (v3), delivers (v5) and saves (v5).
