Some worry that John records Jesus cleansing the temple at the beginning of his ministry while Matthew, Mark and Luke record it towards the end. Tasker in his Tyndale commentary on John (p61) addresses this when he writes: "The reader of the earlier Gospels is well aware that at the beginning of the last week of His earthly life Jesus as Messiah presented a final challenge to the Jewish authorities in the incident commonly known as 'the cleansing of the temple', and that this led directly to the passion. By recording an account of a similar event on the occasion of the first visit of Jesus to Jerusalem after His Messianic began, John is not correcting a supposed chronological blunder on the part of the earlier evangelists, nor deliberately altering their history in the interests of theological exposition, but, we may reasonly suppose, relating an additional 'cleansing' which the Synoptic writers had no occasion to relate, for it did not form part of the Petrine, Galilean tradition which they were embodying."
Assuming this is correct, it shows what Jesus was up against. His initial cleansing and warning was disregarded and the temple traders blatantly re-established their practices despite Jesus' actions.
Here are some points from my pm sermon on 25.11.07 giving an overview of 1&2 Samuel.

3 key chapters mark the significant changes in Israel's history especially Kingship.
* 1 Sam 7:3-17
Samuel calls people to Mizpah and Philistines defeated. Samuel acts as a Prophet but also Judge (7:15-17).
* 1 Sam 12:13-25
God told Samuel to anoint Saul as King (1 Sam 9-11). New role for Samuel as prophet only, with potential for conflict with King.
* 2 Sam 7:1-17
David wanted to build a house for God but God says he will establish David's house (ie his line). God promises him his throne will be established for ever. But Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and Temple in 597BC and deported people into exile. 7:12-16 points to the coming of the King of Kings and his eternal Kingdom.
