I heard a pop song once with the catchy line "Be careful what you pray for; you might just get it!" (Unfortunately I can't remember any of the deatails of the song. Anyone else know it?) The Israelites were a case in poit. They had cried "If only we had died in this wilderness" (14:2). God replied "I will do to you exactly as I heard you say... Your corpses will fall in the wilderness" (14:28,32).
They had not just rejected the leadership of Moses and Aaron. They had rejected God and His guidance and leadership (14:11,23,26,35). And there were consequences to that, as there always are. Moses interceded remarkably on their behalf (14:13-19) and God pardoned them (14:20) rather than wiping them out (14:12), but there were still consequences. The people eventually admitted their error (14:39,40) and decided to enter the Promised Land after all, but it was too late.
It's an important lesson. There may still be negative consequences of our sin despite God's forgiveness.
