We've been reading a lot about burnt offerings and sacrifices in Numbers (and in Leviticus before that). For generation after generation, century after century, the religious life of the Israelites centred around these laws. So the Scribe's words showed amazing spiritual insight - "And to love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, is far more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices" (12:33). It was enough for Jeus to say "You are not far from the Kingdom of God" (2:34). All he needed to do now was put it into practice.

Our Church's Vision Sattement acknowledges the importance of "living out the Great Commandment". But mental or verbal assent to this is not enough. We must also put it into practice. That means truly loving God and others.
