The Leviticus reading was full of rules, most of which have a deep moral background. The Proverbs reading also criticised adultery, continuing the Leviticus theme. But the Leviticus "rules" are interspersed with "I am the Lord your God." and the Psalm reading was all about the power, splendour and glory of God.

The contrast then came with the indulgence of Herod's brithday feast and the killing of John the Baptist on a whim. The contrast between who God is and what He wants for and from His people, and what we humans can actually sink to.

But He still loves us and wants it for us...

As Karen said, "The Leviticus reading was full of rules, most of which have a deep moral background." There are some wonderful instructions in this part of Leviticus that have obvious application and relevance to us today eg not giving preferential treatment to the rich (19:15); not hating a brother (19:17); loving your neighbour as yourself (19:18); loving the foreigners in your midst (19:34); not committing adultery (20:10 and Prov 6:32). But many of the instructions seem to have been for the Israelites back then rather than us eg not sacrificing children to Molech (20:2); not cutting your body for the dead (19:28). The point of them was to ensure that the Israelites remained distinct from the nations around them. God told them "You are to be holy to Me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be Mine" (20:26). Though the specifics may not relate to us, surely the principle does. Christians are to maintain a distinctiveness from the non-Christians around us. It's a principle we break by worldliness.
