Dueteronomy means "second law" or "repeated law". In this book Moses reminds the people of the laws God had given them almost 40 years previously at Mt Sinai. With the nation once again on the verge of crossing over the Jordan River into the Promised Land, he lays out the way they are to live in their new land. His exhortations are poignant farewell speeches because he is not allowed to enter with them.

Three key themes.
(1) Remember the past -- their history (eg 1-4), their sinfulness (eg 9:6-7), God's faithfulness (eg 7:8-9).
(2) Consider the future -- the coming generations (eg 6:1-14), blessings (eg 8:7-10); choose the way (eg 30:15-18).
(3) Love the LORD -- eg 6:5. Jesus quoted this verse when asked which of the commandments was the greatest.

My pick of the key verse would be 10:12, together with 13.
