Hi and welcome. Ashfield Baptist Church is a "caring community church sharing God's love". We are very diverse in our nationalities, backgrounds and ages, but united in our desire to grow spiritually and to reach out and help others. Our vision is "to be a body of Christ-like people living out the great commandment and the great commission in the Holy Spirit's power". This blog is mainly for people connected with Ashfield Baptist Church. It has been set up as an "info & chat space" as we start the "THRU IN 2" challenge. This is our program for reading the Bible right through during 2007 & 2008. Many are using the Every Day With Jesus Bible which also has daily devotions from Selwyn Hughes. As we read through the Bible together over these two years, we can use this blog to share insights, stories, reflections, questions etc. The goal is to grow spiritually together. Dueteronomy means "second law" or "repeated law". In this book Moses reminds the people of the laws God had given them almost 40 years previously at Mt Sinai. With the nation once again on the verge of crossing over the Jordan River into the Promised Land, he lays out the way they are to live in their new land. His exhortations are poignant farewell speeches because he is not allowed to enter with them.
Three key themes.
(1) Remember the past -- their history (eg 1-4), their sinfulness (eg 9:6-7), God's faithfulness (eg 7:8-9).
(2) Consider the future -- the coming generations (eg 6:1-14), blessings (eg 8:7-10); choose the way (eg 30:15-18).
(3) Love the LORD -- eg 6:5. Jesus quoted this verse when asked which of the commandments was the greatest.
My pick of the key verse would be 10:12, together with 13.
