In the evening sermon on 19 August I preached on Deut 8:6-20. I pointed out 2 main warnings for when things are going well. (1) v14a: Not to exalt yourself (2) v14b: Not to forget God. I suggested pride (or lack of humility) is the key issue that links these two warnings.

I like James Dobson's comment on pride in "The Strong-willed Child" -- "Whenever I'm tempted to become self-important and authoritative, I'm reminded of what the mother whale said to her baby. When you get to the top and start to blow, that's when you get harpooned."

Numbers 12:3 tells us Moses was more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth, yet he was also a great leader.

Gordon's "editorial" in the bulletin of 19/8/07 is worth repeating here (in part).
"Two pivotal quotes from this weekend's 'Thru in 2' passages. In the first, David reaffirms his commitment to God and his desire to do God's will as he seeks God's help to overcome specific issues and difficulties threatening his life. In the second, Jesus speaks about those who say the right things, make the right noises, but don't have it in their hearts to back up their fine sounding words. In other words, there's no substance to their lives: It's all superficial and more than a bit hypocritical. Together, the two passages remind us that life is about both knowing and doing God's will. It's about obedience. It's about the recognition that life is not all about me, it's about God, and about His Son. It's about how I can best serve Him and be doing His will on a daily basis. God wants to be involved in our lives; after all, He made us, He loves us and He gave His Son for us. He wants us to be in relationship with him, but on His terms, to serve Him out of the right inner desires, not to simply please ourselves."
