Would God have helped Jephthah defeat the Midianites even if he hadn't made that vow to the LORD (Jud 11:30)? Surely! Other judges had great victories without such vows. His vow was rashly made, as subsequent events indicate. Though human sacrifice was forbidden for Israelites, the practice was common among the Canaanites and Jephthah's half-Canaanite background may have been a factor in his actions. His vow cost him the life of his daughter. A gruesome warning against rash promises to God!
