After fleeing from Saul and hiding away in a cave, David has been delivered. Verses 7-11 of Ps 57 are a beautiful song of praise and thanksgiving to God. We still sing these words today, set to a contemporary tune -- "I will give thanks to thee, O Lord, among the nations..." What is particularly inspiring here is the extent of David's vision. Certainly not self-centred or localised! He will sing God's praises among the nations. God's love and faithfulness reaches to the sky. God will be exalted above the heavens. God's glory will be over all the earth. Our God is indeed a big God deserving of big praise.

If you thought Gideon was hard to work out, I think Samson is even more so. For someone who is apparently dedicated to God's service by way of special divine announcement, he certainly has shown no special characteristics so far, other than that he can tear a lion in half. Apart from that he appears egotistical and self-centred, refuses to listen to his parents, and has violent tendencies. He really has little to recommend him except that he at least appears to be mostly killing Philistines.

I agree. And he comes across even worse in the next couple of chapters.
Delilah would probably agree with you too. Karen B is actually speaking on this part of Judges in an interesting way on Sun night. It will be a narrative sermon in which she takes the part of Delilah, pulled from the rubble and sharing her reflections on Samson. Karen has done a fair bit of reading for it including some feminist theologians. Sounds very interesting.
