My sermon in the morning on Sunday 4.11.07 gave a brief overview of the book of Ruth. Here are a few of the key points.
* The events took place during difficult times of famine and during the period of the Judges (1:1). Yet this story of love, marriage, faith and friendship is a breath of fresh air compared to the savagery, bloodshed and lawlessness in Judges.
* Naomi - an example of trust in God, despite bitter experiences. 2:20.
* Ruth - an example of fithfulness to others (Naomi, Boaz). 1:15-17; 2:11; 4:15.
* Boaz - an example of integrity (eg in dealings with Ruth, in taking up kinsman-redeemer role).
* God - author emphasises Sovereignty of God (Ruth an ancestor of David and Jesus), and the inclusiveness of God (Ruth a Moabitess).
* A 5 year old asked Peter Costello: "Who made cactuses?" He answered: "This is an important question. This is one of life's most difficult questions. God made everything, so God made cactuses."
At communion we considered Jesus as Redeemer.
My sermon in the morning on Sunday 25.11.07 gave a brief overview of the book of John. Here are a few of the key points.
JOHN'S PURPOSE
Doesn't record parables, but lots of symbolism and imagery.
"Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name." (20:30-31)
7 SIGNS
In John, signs are pointers to who Jesus is (the Son of God).
#1. 2:1-11 water into wine (authority)
#2. 4:46-54 healing the nobleman's son (faith)
#3. 5:1-9 healing the paralytic (grace)
#4. 6:1-14 feeding the 5,000 (provision)
#5. 6:16-21 stilling the storm (peace)
#6. 9:1-7 healing blind man (light)
#7. 11:38-45 raising Lazarus (life)
7 "I AM" SAYINGS
#1. 6:35,41,48,51 bread of life
#2. 8:12;9:5 light of the world
#3. 10:7,9 the door of the sheep
#4. 10:11,14 the Good Shepherd
#5. 11:25 resurrection and life
#6. 14:6 the way, truth, life
#7. 15;1,5 the true vine
Jesus calls himself "I AM" in 4:26; 8:28,58; 13:19; 18:5-8, thus claiming to be God.
KEY VERSE
Hard to choose between 3:16 and 14:6.
CLIMAX
"Doubting" Thomas' statement in 20:28. Note 1:11,12. Do you reject or believe?
