As we've seen recently, Leviticus says "Each of you is to respect his father and mother" (19:3) and "If anyone curses his father and mother, he must be put to death" (20:9). In today's reading from Mark, Jesus criticises the Pharisees for circumventing these instructions by invoking a tradition of their making. The issue is one of legalism vs a heart in tune with God's. It's worth contemplating the ways in which we make the same mistake.
