Mark records in quick succession both the feeding of the 5,000 (Mk 6) and the 4,000 (Mk 8). The former would have been almost all Jews. The latter crowd was mostly Gentile, though there were probably quite a few Jews as well. Mark, writing to Gentiles, is keen to tell this story. He does so with language and themes that relate to God's provision for the Israelites in the wilderness before they enter the Promised Land. Here is the New Israel, Gentiles and Jews together, feasting on bread (and incidentally, fish) in the wilderness. Jesus (the bread, who has come down from Heaven) feeds them with physical bread and also the spiritual bread (the teaching of God's Word). Here were multiple pointers to Jesus' Messiahship and mission. But even the disciples failed to understand despite all they had witnessed (8:17,21)
