This is my favourite chapter in Leviticus. God promises abundant blessings if they follow His ways. Most significantly, He will be with them and will confirm His Covenant with them (26:9,11-12). Of course there are negative consequences if they don't, but even then the Covenant will remain (26:44). We need to be wary of applying this chapter in a naive mechanistic way lest we come up with a form of "prosperity gospel". But it is nonetheless a beautiful picture of God's ultimate desire for His people.

There will no doubt be struggles and difficulties along the way though, even for the faithful Christian. The reading in Mark, a crucial one, points this out. The disciples finally understand who Jesus is, Peter declaring on their behalf "You are the Messiah" (8:29). Now Jesus begins to teach them the nature of his Messiahship. He points out how he will suffer many things and be killed before rising to life (8:31-32). But he also explains that the life of his disciples/followers is also to be characterised by self-denial and cross-carrying.
