Today's readings from Numbers and Mark are both high drama. The Israelite leaders rebel against Moses and Aaron in Numbers, and The Jewish leaders come against Jesus in Mark. Though very different situations, there is a similar mob mentality in both. And both mobs oppose the LORD's Chosen.

The big difference is in the outcomes. Those who opposed Moses and Aaron were quickly punished by God with death -- dozens by earthquake, 250 by fire and 14,700 by plague. Those who arrested Jesus succeeded in getting him executed. Moses and Aaron interceded on behalf of the people and made atonement for them (Nu 16:22,47). Jesus died, making atonement for our sin, and then rose again, ever living to make intercession for us.

Half-truths and downright lies abound during conflicts. Moses was accused of exalting and appointing himself (16:3,13) whwn God had chosen and called him. His accusers described Egypt as a land flowing with milk and honey (16:13) and criticised him for leading them from there into the wilderness! The people accused Moses and Aaron of killing the LORD's people (16:41). Jesus was unjustly accused of all sorts of things (Mk 14:55-59; 15:3).

Moses and Aaron were ultimately successful as leaders because they constantly sought the heart and mond of God and His direction. Throughout Numbers 16, during this time of crisis, we see them constantly meeting with God. Note especially "fell facedown" in 16:4,22,45. Jesus did the same. Just before the mob came for him, and knowing they were coming, He "fell to the ground" in prayer before God, seeking His will (Mk 14:35).
