At our services on Sunday 28 October, we had two excellent, thought-provoking sermons, both relating to the day's "Thru in 2" readings.
In the morning, Rev Richard Geering (Chaplian for Ashfield Baptist Homes Ltd) spoke on "Simon, a Picture of Discipleship" from Luke 23:26. He pointed out that Simon, a "foreigner", was willing to pick up the cross and follow Jesus while many others, including his disciples, had fled or stood off at a diatance. Richard's applications about inclusiveness and commitment were a timely challenge.
Then at night we had a visit from Delilah - actually, Karen Beaton in character (and in costume). "Delilah" not only told us about Samson from her perspective, but also shared some of her feelings and motivations. The climax was her affirmation that the source of Samson's strength wasn't his uncut hair but His God. Again, very thought-provoking. In fact, there was quite a lot of spontaneous discussion about the story of Samson and Delilah (both the Biblical and Hollywood versions) over supper.
Karen - Would you like to comment a little further on a couple of questions arising from the night?
1. Was Delilah an Israelite or a Philistine?
2. Did she love Samson?
3. What was her motivation for getting Samson's secret and passing it on?
4. Did she realise that Samson would be so badly treated?
