What a contrast between these passages from Judges and Luke. The former is full of degradation, horror and death, because in those days there was no king in Israel (19:1). The latter is full of hope and promise and life, because there was a king in Israel -- the risen King of Kings!

The difference is no accident of chance. God grieved over human sinfulness and sent Jesus as Saviour and Redeemer.

Here is part of Gordon's comment on Lk 24:1-6 from the bulletin of 4 November 2007.

There has been no greater miracle in history than the empty tomb, the confirmation that Jesus of Nazareth, Messiah, Son of God, was not dead but alive! Yet those women had seen Jesus put to death on a cross just days earlier. For them, and for all the disciples, it had seemed like the end. Yet now came the truth. Just as Jesus himself had predicted, he was alive. The grave could not hold him. Death had been conquered! Now, life took on a whole new dimension. And Jesus is alive today. We, his disciples in the 21st century, know him and serve him... as master, Lord and friend. And we invite others to come to know him too. The excitement and wonder that those women felt when they found out the truth is something that we too can mirror when we put our lives in his hands and realise for the first time just what a change Jesus can make to us. This is no dead, impersonal god! Jesus is the living Son of the living God - and he loves and cares for us. We can know him and he offers us today the gift of God's love and salvation. How will you respond to the love of God today?
