After 3 eventful years during which they had shared so much, it was time for Jesus to leave his disciples. He blessed them and ascended into heaven. One might have thought that this would have left the disciples rather sad and sombre. But somewhat surprisingly, Luke says "they returned to Jerusalem with great joy." (24:52) Perhaps it was Jesus' blessing or the assurance that Jesus was going to send them what his Father promised.

Even more startling in some ways is what they did before heading down the mountain. They worshiped him! Jesus leaves them, and then they worship him. They must have still had a strong sense of Jesus' presence to do that.

Their worship of Jesus wasn't incongruent with worship of God but went hand in hand with it. When back in Jerusalem, they continually attended the temple to worship God (v53). This was not incongruent because Jesus was the Son of God, the very incarnation of God. Having witnessed the resurrection, they knew it. Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem for empowerment from on high. They did, but so great was their joy that they couldn't refrain from blessing God while they waited.
